Caution for Mobile Users: Stay Alert Against Fake Messages

In a recent update shared on its official X handle, the DoT warned mobile users against falling prey to fraudulent SMS. The advisory emphasized that legitimate banks or government agencies will never ask for personal information, such as account details or OTPs, via text messages.

How to Identify and Report Fake SMS

  • Be cautious of messages that claim to be from banks or government agencies but request sensitive details.
  • If you suspect an SMS to be fraudulent, report it immediately on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
  • The DoT shared a sample fake SMS disguised as an SBI Bank communication to educate users about the tactics employed by scammers.

Strengthened Measures to Tackle Fraudulent Communications

New Guidelines for Telecom Operators

To combat the surge in fraudulent calls and messages, TRAI and the DoT have implemented robust measures:

  • Message Whitelisting: Telemarketing entities are now required to register on a whitelist to ensure that only verified communications reach mobile users.
  • Network-Level Blocking: Telecom operators must block fake calls and messages at the source.
  • Message Traceability: New regulations ensure that the origin of every SMS can be traced, making it easier to identify fraudsters.

Fines for Non-Compliance

TRAI has imposed fines totaling ₹142 crore on telecom operators for failing to prevent fake communications. The DoT has directed these fines to be deducted from the bank guarantees provided by the operators.

Consequences for Fraudulent SIM Usage

In addition to targeting fake messages, strict actions are being taken against individuals who misuse SIM cards or engage in fraudulent activities:

  • Severe Penalties: Offenders could face bans of up to three years.
  • SIM Card Deactivation: Blacklisted individuals will have their SIM cards disabled and will be barred from obtaining a new connection for a period ranging from six months to three years.
  • Cybersecurity Threats: Such actions are being classified as threats to cybersecurity, underscoring their severity.

Sanchar Saathi Portal: A Tool for Consumer Protection

The Sanchar Saathi portal has emerged as a critical tool in the fight against telecommunications fraud. It allows users to:

  • Report Suspicious Messages: Submit fraudulent SMS directly to authorities for investigation.
  • Ensure Safety: Protect themselves and others by helping authorities trace and block scam operations.
