Mercedes G Wagon Goes Electric: The Iconic SUV Now Available in India

One of the most legendary off-roaders in the world, the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon, has officially embraced electrification. The all-electric Mercedes G 580 EQ has made its Indian debut, complete with its hallmark ruggedness, luxury, and now, zero tailpipe emissions. Priced at a hefty ₹3 crore (ex-showroom), the electric G Wagon—dubbed Edition One—brings EQ technology to one of the most recognizable SUV silhouettes on the planet.

An Icon Reimagined

The G Wagon has always been synonymous with brute strength, off-road prowess, and luxury—a combination that made it a cult favorite worldwide. However, it wasn’t exactly known for efficiency. The electric G 580 EQ, with its 117 kWh battery pack, addresses this long-standing shortcoming by offering a claimed range of 420 km per charge.

At its launch, Mercedes officials emphasized the vehicle’s cult status in India and the growing demand for luxury electric vehicles in the market. With the introduction of the G 580 EQ, Mercedes expands its EV lineup in India, which now includes models like the EQA, EQS, EQS Maybach, and the recently unveiled EQS SUV 450.

Design: Classic Yet Modern

In a bold departure from the brand’s other EQ models, the G 580 EQ retains its traditional boxy design—a nod to its internal combustion engine (ICE) sibling. The classic lines remain intact, preserving the iconic G Wagon aesthetic. However, subtle tweaks, such as aerodynamically optimized wheels and a slightly updated rear design, enhance both efficiency and visual appeal.

The SUV continues to exude its rugged persona with protective strips around the body, maintaining its off-road credibility. Despite the electric transformation, the G 580 EQ remains a serious off-road machine.

Power Meets Capability

Off-road enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the G 580 EQ retains impressive capabilities. It boasts a water-wading depth of up to 850 mm and can handle inclines with up to 70 percent gradients. Additionally, it features a 35-degree maximum incline stability, a 20.3-degree ramp angle, a 32-degree approach angle, and a 30.7-degree departure angle. With 250 mm of ground clearance, the G 580 EQ is one of the tallest luxury SUVs on the road, offering supreme off-road versatility.

Interior: Luxury Meets Tech

Inside, the G 580 EQ is every bit as luxurious as one would expect from a high-end Mercedes. It features a three-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls, the latest iteration of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, and a unique Off-Road Cockpit that allows drivers to manage differential locks and LOW RANGE settings.

A standout feature is the transparent bonnet function, which uses camera feeds to help drivers navigate tricky terrain by providing a virtual view of obstacles directly beneath the front of the vehicle. Adding a touch of drama is G-Roar, an artificial sound generator that mimics engine acoustics, offering a more emotive experience for drivers who miss the roar of a traditional engine.

A Serious EV Off-Roader

Despite its electric heart, Mercedes insists that the G 580 EQ is more capable than ever before. The vehicle’s design, powertrain, and off-road tech come together to ensure it lives up to its G Wagon legacy. While the battery-powered SUV may not offer the same range as some of its EQ siblings, it’s built for more than just smooth highways—it’s designed to conquer the most challenging terrains with zero emissions.
