Apple Discontinues iPhone 14, 14 Plus, and SE (3rd Gen) Across Europe Due to EU Regulations

Apple has taken a decisive step by halting sales of three iPhone models—the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE (3rd generation)—in several European countries. This move is a direct response to the European Union’s 2022 regulation mandating USB Type-C ports for all smartphones and certain electronic devices sold within its 27 member states.

The affected models, which still feature Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector, no longer comply with the new EU standards aimed at reducing electronic waste. Consequently, Apple has removed these devices from its online store and physical retail outlets in numerous countries, including Austria, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Interestingly, the ban extends beyond the EU’s jurisdiction. Switzerland, which is not an EU member, has also discontinued the sale of these models. Northern Ireland, which adheres to some EU regulations due to the Brexit agreement, will also see these iPhones disappear from shelves.

Apple’s Compliance and Future Strategy

Initially resistant to the USB-C mandate, Apple has since adapted, introducing USB-C ports in the latest iPhone 15 lineup. The discontinuation of the iPhone 14 and SE models highlights the company’s swift efforts to align its product portfolio with the new standards while clearing inventory in affected regions.

The Future: iPhone 17 Air and Foldable Devices

While Apple clears its current lineup, anticipation for its next generation of devices is building. Reports suggest that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, slated for a September 2025 release, will be Apple’s thinnest smartphone yet, featuring a sleeker design and advanced functionality.

Additionally, speculation continues around Apple’s development of foldable devices, with rumors of a foldable iPhone and iPad gaining traction. These innovations could mark a significant shift in Apple’s design philosophy and position the company to compete in the growing foldable tech market.
