Google Introduces QR Code-Based File Sharing via Quick Share for Android Users Globally

Google has officially rolled out a QR code-based file sharing feature for Android users, aiming to make file transfers faster and more reliable. This new addition enhances the Quick Share tool, which is already widely used on Android devices. Available as part of the latest Google Play Services version 24.49.33, the feature is being gradually rolled out worldwide.

How QR Code Sharing Works

Using the new feature is remarkably simple. When users select the Quick Share option in the share menu, they’ll notice a new “Use QR code” button under the “Send to nearby devices” section. Tapping this generates a unique QR code alongside the Quick Share logo. To ensure smooth scanning, the device’s screen automatically brightens when the QR code is displayed.

On the recipient side, it’s equally effortless—users just need to open their camera app, point it at the QR code, and the “quickshare.google” link will open automatically, initiating the file transfer. Importantly, there’s no need to add contacts, verify devices, or adjust settings, making the process quick and seamless.

One of the standout aspects of this feature is its ability to handle multiple recipients simultaneously. Several devices can scan the same QR code, making it perfect for group file sharing, such as distributing photos at events or sharing documents during meetings. For those who have faced difficulties with Quick Share detecting nearby devices, this new method provides a reliable alternative.

Part of Google’s Latest Feature Bundle

The QR code-based sharing is part of Google’s December 2024 Feature Bundle, which focuses on improving Android’s usability. While Quick Share has been available for a while, this update directly addresses issues where nearby devices may not appear in the list, making file transfers more consistent and user-friendly.

Google emphasized that this enhancement not only improves the overall file-sharing experience but also strengthens Android’s reputation as a versatile and user-centric platform. Whether for everyday users or IT professionals managing large-scale device deployments, QR code sharing adds a new layer of convenience and reliability.
