OnePlus 13 to Launch with iPhone-Inspired Magnetic Cases: Here’s How They Work

The wait is almost over! The OnePlus 13 series is set to launch tomorrow, January 7, in India, with two flagship models—OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R. Positioned as high-performance smartphones, the OnePlus 13 will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, while the more affordable OnePlus 13R will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

However, hardware isn’t the only exciting upgrade. OnePlus is introducing a new feature inspired by Apple’s MagSafe technology—magnetic cases that allow users to seamlessly attach compatible accessories. This move marks a significant step toward building an ecosystem of magnetically connected accessories, similar to what Apple has done with MagSafe.

Magnetic Cases: What’s New?

OnePlus has officially confirmed the introduction of magnetic cases with the OnePlus 13 series. Leaked unboxing videos reveal three magnetic case options for the OnePlus 13:

  • Aramid fibre magnetic case
  • Wood-grain magnetic case
  • Sandstone magnetic case

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 13R will feature a sandstone magnetic case option. These cases allow users to attach a range of accessories, including OnePlus’ newly launched 50W AirVOOC magnetic wireless charger. This wireless charger connects magnetically, ensuring a secure and consistent charging experience without the hassle of cables.

How It Works

Similar to Apple’s MagSafe, OnePlus’ magnetic cases use embedded magnets to attach compatible accessories securely. The magnetic connection is designed to keep accessories, like chargers and power banks, firmly attached, even during movement.

In China, OnePlus has already launched a magnetic power bank, which is expected to hit the Indian market soon. This power bank is thin, lightweight, and connects magnetically to the back of the device for on-the-go charging without interruptions.

The Growing Magnetic Accessory Ecosystem

OnePlus’ magnetic accessory ecosystem is reminiscent of Apple’s MagSafe, which debuted with the iPhone 12. Since then, Apple’s ecosystem has expanded to include wallets, power banks, chargers, and even third-party grips. Over time, this has evolved into a lucrative and widely adopted category of accessories.

Notably, Oppo, OnePlus’ sister brand, is also adopting similar magnetic technology. The Oppo Find X8 series offers aramid fibre and leather-textured magnetic cases with support for attachable accessories. This trend signals a growing interest in magnetically attached ecosystems across smartphone brands, which could lead to a broader range of third-party accessories.
