ESI Scheme: Comprehensive Health and Pension Benefits for Employees and Their Families

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) offers a robust welfare scheme aimed at providing healthcare and social security benefits to employees with lower income levels. Known as the ESI scheme, this initiative not only ensures free medical treatment for employees but also extends its benefits to their dependent family members. Eligibility for ESI Benefits

Employees earning a monthly salary of ₹21,000 or less are eligible for ESI benefits, with a higher threshold of ₹25,000 for those with physical disabilities. Contributions are made jointly by employees and employers, with employees contributing 1.75% of their salary and employers contributing 4.75%.

Free Medical Treatment for Employees and Dependents

The ESI card grants employees and their families access to free medical treatment at over 150 ESI hospitals and dispensaries across India. This coverage spans minor ailments to severe medical conditions, ensuring comprehensive healthcare for insured individuals.

  • Unlimited Coverage: There is no upper limit on medical expenses for both employees and their dependents.
  • Retired and Disabled Employees: Retired employees and permanently disabled insured persons can also avail of free medical care, along with their spouses, by paying a nominal annual premium of ₹120.

Monetary Benefits During Illness and Maternity

The ESI scheme provides a range of financial benefits to support employees during critical periods:

  • Paid Leave: Insured individuals can avail up to 91 days of paid leave during illnesses.
  • Maternity Leave: Women employees receive 100% of their average wages for up to 26 weeks during maternity leave. In cases of abortion, benefits are extended for up to six weeks.

Pension and Disability Benefits

The scheme ensures financial stability for insured individuals and their families in unforeseen circumstances:

  • Disability Pension:
    • Temporary disability: Monthly pension provided until full recovery.
    • Permanent disability: Lifetime pension based on the extent of disability.
  • Dependent Pension: If the insured individual passes away while employed, the ESIC provides a monthly pension to the dependents in proportion to the insured person’s salary.
  • Funeral Expenses: A one-time financial assistance of ₹10,000 is offered to cover funeral costs.
