Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has received a bomb threat via email, marking the second such incident in less than a month. The threatening email, written in Russian, was sent to the official email address of the RBI Governor on Friday. Mumbai Police has launched an investigation into the matter.
Police Statement and Investigation
The Mumbai Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered at the Mata Ramabai Marg Police Station against an unidentified individual. Speaking on the matter, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) said, “A threatening email in Russian was received on the official email address of the Reserve Bank of India. The email warned of a bomb threat to the bank premises. An FIR has been lodged under relevant sections, and investigations are underway.”
The police are employing cybercrime specialists and language experts to trace the sender and understand the motive behind the threat.
Timing Raises Concerns
The incident comes just a day after Sanjay Mehrotra assumed the position of RBI Governor, succeeding Shaktikanta Das, who served in the role for six years. The timing of the email has raised security concerns and prompted a heightened alert at the central bank’s Mumbai office.
Recurrent Threats
This is the second bomb threat received by the RBI within a month, intensifying concerns over the security of India’s central banking institution. Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of the premises and personnel.
